FAQ

How many detectors do I need?

Smoke detectors: every bedroom, every hallway leading to bedrooms, every level of the home (including basement). CO detectors: at least one near sleeping areas, plus one on every level if you have gas appliances or attached garage.

Hardwired or battery — which is better?

Hardwired with battery backup is best (and required for new construction). For existing homes without wiring, 10-year sealed-battery units are the most reliable retrofit. We don’t recommend regular 9V battery units — they fail and get the batteries removed too often.

How often should detectors be replaced?

Smoke detectors: every 10 years (most have a date stamp on the back). CO detectors: every 5-7 years per manufacturer. Beeping detectors at 3am usually mean the unit has hit end-of-life, not just the battery.

Can you do this as part of a bigger pre-listing prep?

Yes — this is a common GoMarketReady item. We audit, replace expired units, and add any missing units in one visit.
