Why We Exist

Most homeowners have a list of small repairs they’ve been putting off. The reasons are familiar: hard to find someone reliable, hard to know what a fair price is, hard to trust that the person showing up will respect your house and finish what they start.

We started Handyman Jacks to fix that experience. Quality workmanship, fair pricing, honest communication, and a real warranty when the job’s done. No surprises. No shortcuts. No “this’ll do” finishes.

Why People Dread Hiring a Contractor, and What We Do About It

Almost everyone has a story. Ask around at work or at church and you'll hear the same handful of complaints over and over. We built Handyman Jacks around fixing each one, so here they are, straight, along with exactly what we do differently.

1. “They never showed up, and never called.” The single most common complaint about our whole industry. We schedule real appointment windows, and if something runs long on an earlier job, you get a call or text before your window, not after. We do our best to show up on time, every time, and when we can't, you hear it from us first.

2. “I called three guys and nobody called me back.” Every request that comes in gets a response, and we do our best to get back to you within one business day. You can send photos and get a real number back without waiting on anyone's schedule. No black holes, no chasing us down.

3. “The price changed halfway through.” You get a written estimate before we touch anything. If we open a wall and find something nobody could have known about, we stop, show you what we found, and quote the additional work before continuing. You are never surprised by the invoice.

4. “I don't know who I'm letting into my house.” Every person on our team is background checked, license checked, and properly insured before they ever walk into a customer's home. We hire for skill and professionalism, the kind of person you'd want around your family and your things.

5. “They left a mess for me to clean up.” Drop cloths go down, cuts stay clean, and debris leaves with us. The job site at the end of the day shouldn't look worse than how we found it. That's not a perk, it's the standard.

6. “They started it and never finished.” We scope realistically before we start, and we don't take on more than we can finish well. If your list is bigger than the time booked, we tell you up front instead of leaving you with a half-done kitchen.

7. “It broke a month later and they wouldn't come back.” Every job carries a 1-year labor warranty. If our work fails inside that window because of how we did it, we come back and fix it. No hedging, no upcharge, no arguing about it.

8. “Was that guy even licensed? Am I on the hook if he gets hurt?” We're a Licensed Utah General Contractor (#14195166-5501) carrying full general liability insurance, and we'll hand you a certificate of insurance any time you ask. When a job needs a specialty trade license, it goes to a licensed Utah contractor in that trade, and it's still one call to us.

What Makes Us Different

Three things show up on every job:

1. We stand by the work. Every job carries a 1-year labor warranty. If something we installed or repaired fails inside that window because of our work, we come back and fix it. No hedging, no upcharge.

2. We bid honestly. Listed prices on this website are starting points, not hard quotes. We walk the job before committing to a number so you know what you’re paying for. No bait-and-switch. No “while we’re here” upsells you didn’t ask for.

3. We treat your house like ours. Drop cloths, clean cuts, debris hauled away. The job site at the end of the day shouldn’t look worse than how we found it.

Pre-Listing Repair Specialty

One of our strongest niches is pre-listing repair work for home sellers. We started this program because we saw too many sellers leaving money on the table, either skipping cheap repairs that would have boosted offer prices, or getting hit with inspection concessions for items that could have been fixed for a fraction of the buyer’s ask.

The Team

Handyman Jacks is owned and operated by Kris Bowen, a longtime Utah real estate broker who started HMJ to give his clients (and everyone else) a better option for home repairs. Operations are run by Barbie, who handles scheduling, customer intake, and making sure nothing falls through the cracks.

We have our own in-house team of handymen, and every one of them is vetted before they ever walk into a customer's home: background checked, license checked, and properly insured. They bring decades of combined trade experience to every job, and we hire for skill, professionalism, and reliability, the kind of person you’d want walking into your own house.

When a job calls for a specialty license, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, roofing, it’s still one call to us. We maintain great relationships with vetted, approved specialty contractors who carry the specific Utah trade license the work requires, and we hold them to the same standard we hold our own team: background checked, license verified, and properly insured. You get one schedule, one point of contact, and one company standing behind the work.

How We Bid

Every job starts with a walkthrough, either on-site or via photos and a quick video call for smaller scopes. We look at the work, ask about your timeline and priorities, and give you a written estimate before any work begins.

Our pricing reflects what it actually costs to do the work right: skilled labor, quality materials, drive time, warranty coverage, and the insurance that protects you if something goes wrong. When you call us, you’re calling for the job done right the first time, backed by warranty, insurance, and a real person on the other end of the phone.

Bigger Than a Handyman Job? Still Call Us.

Knowing where we stop is part of doing right by you, but that doesn't mean we leave you to figure it out alone. Over the years we've built relationships with builders and commercial contractors we genuinely trust, and we're happy to point you to the right one, or manage the work and sub it out ourselves so you keep a single point of contact. If you're not sure whether it's a job for us, call us anyway. We'll tell you straight and get you to the right people either way.

New construction, additions, and major remodels. We're a repair and improvement company, not a custom homebuilder. We work with excellent residential builders across the Wasatch Front and can introduce you directly, or coordinate the project on your behalf.

Commercial buildouts and tenant improvements. We handle light commercial maintenance and property management work in-house. For full commercial projects, we have commercial general contractors we refer to and trust, and we can stay involved as your coordinator if that's easier for you.

Specialty licensed trades. Major electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and roofing work is performed by a licensed Utah contractor in that specific trade. It's still one call to us, one schedule, and one company standing behind the work.

Insurance: Full general liability insurance coverage. Certificate of insurance available on request, many of our pre-listing clients (and the agents who refer them) ask for one, and we provide it without friction.
