Spring startup: when and how

The 8 most common Wasatch Front sprinkler failures (and how to diagnose them)

What you see: You hit “Start” on the controller. Nothing happens. No water flow. Total silence.

Most likely cause (in order): 1) Main shutoff valve is still closed (most common, happens after winterization). 2) Backflow preventer test cocks are open. 3) Controller has lost its programming and is in vacation/off mode. 4) Controller battery died. 5) The whole controller is dead.

DIY fix or call? First three are DIY. Last two need a controller swap (~$200-400 with installation by a pro).

What you see: Most zones run fine but one specific zone doesn’t come on when its turn comes.

Most likely cause: 1) That zone’s valve solenoid burned out (very common, 3-5 year lifespan in Utah’s mineral water). 2) Wiring damage from rodent chew or shovel strike. 3) Valve diaphragm clogged with mineral debris.

DIY fix or call? Solenoid swap is DIY if you know where the valves are buried. Diaphragm clean is DIY if you can locate the valve. Wiring trace requires a wire-tracer tool and pro time.

What you see: The zone activates, but heads only rise an inch or two and spray a sad dribble.

Most likely cause: 1) Mineral buildup inside spray nozzles (most common). 2) Pressure regulator failing. 3) Cracked or partially-broken supply line draining pressure before water reaches the heads.

DIY fix or call? Nozzle cleaning is DIY, unscrew nozzle, soak in CLR or vinegar overnight, reinstall. Pressure regulator and underground line issues need a pro.

What you see: Most heads on the zone work fine. One head is shooting water at the neighbor’s house, the sidewalk, or geyser-ing straight up.

Most likely cause: 1) Nozzle is clogged on one side (mineral buildup). 2) Head is misaligned from lawnmower hit or freeze-shift. 3) Riser cracked under the head.

DIY fix or call? First two are 5-minute DIY fixes. Riser replacement requires digging.

What you see: When the zone activates, water bubbles up around the BASE of a head, not from the head itself.

Most likely cause: Cracked riser below ground. Almost always caused by winter freeze. The riser is the vertical pipe connecting the supply line to the head.

DIY fix or call? DIY if you’re comfortable digging up the head, cutting/splicing the riser, and reseating the head. Most homeowners would rather pay a pro $75-150 to handle it.

What you see: Even when the system is “off,” one zone or specific head dribbles water continuously. Your water bill keeps climbing.

Most likely cause: Valve diaphragm not seating fully due to debris (very common in Utah). The valve never fully closes, so a trickle of water keeps flowing.

DIY fix or call? DIY if you can find the valve and open the diaphragm chamber. Clean any debris, reseat the diaphragm. Pro fix if the diaphragm itself is torn (~$50-100 with a service call).

What you see: Every zone has the same problem, heads barely rise, spray is weak, coverage is poor.

Most likely cause: 1) Main shutoff valve is only partially open. 2) Pressure regulator failing. 3) Main supply line has a slow leak between meter and backflow.

DIY fix or call? Check that main shutoff is fully open. If yes, you need a pro to diagnose pressure issues.

What you see: Controller screen is blank, frozen, or showing “Err” / “Open” / fault codes.

Most likely cause: 1) Power adapter died. 2) Internal fuse blown. 3) Controller itself is end-of-life (most last 8-12 years).

DIY fix or call? Power adapter is a $20 part swap if you can match the voltage. Fuse replacement is DIY for the brave. Full controller replacement is best done by a pro because the zone wires need to be terminated correctly.

Winter blowout: when and why it’s non-negotiable

The single most expensive sprinkler mistake Wasatch Front homeowners make is skipping the fall blowout to “save the $80 service fee.” Winter freeze damage to a sprinkler system regularly costs $1,000-$3,000 to repair the following spring, because the damage shows up across multiple zones, multiple heads, and underground.
